International Board Certified Lactation Consultants are specialists in human lactation, they clinically support families providing evidence & experience based education regarding feeding their babies.
We are, in the most part, more clinically and theoretically experienced than Midwives and other Health Professionals if they have not taken the IBCLC exam (that is coming from a Midwife! I hold my hands up that as a Midwife I knew a lot less to be able to adequately support families with feeding, it was more of a handed down knowledge or personal experience practice!)
To become a Lactation Consultant you have to first complete at least 1000 hours of lactation support 1:1 with families among other requirements to sit the exam.To take the rigorous exam a potential IBCLC must meet specific educational and clinical experience put forward by the International Board of lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE). IT IS A GLOBALLY RECOGNISED CERTIFICATION….and let me say the path is not an easy or cheap one!
As an IBCLC I have in depth knowledge of breastfeeding, physiology and anatomy of lactation, addressing challenges such as latching, sore nipples, plugged ducts, mastitis, breastfeeding techniques and milk supply issues. I also educate pre natally and postnatally about breastfeeding, benefits and correct feeding practices. As IBCLCS WE ADHERE TO A CODE OF CONDUCT & TO THE WHO CODE OF MARKETING.
We help contribute towards and help promote successful feeding experiences for the mother and baby dyad.
